The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) launched a cold-related illness (CRI) surveillance system in 2013. Annually, a nationwide network of approximately 500 hospital emergency rooms (ERs) participates in the system
during the coldest part of the year in Korea; December to February. The aim of the system is to monitor the incidence of
patients with illnesses caused by the cold, such as hypothermia, frostbite, trench foot or immersion foot, and chilblains. Over the past five years (2014-2018), the KCDC¡¯s surveillance system reported 2,417 cases of CRI, and among them, 63 CRIrelated deaths. The majority of CRI cases were observed in December (25 deaths, 39.7%) and in January (1,005 patients, 41.6%). The highest proportion of cases correlated with the following variables: men (72.4%); people in their 50s (20.8%); people who are drinkers (33.4%); people who suffered from hypothermia (79.9%), and the majority of cases occurred between 6 am and 12 pm (30.1%) in Gyeonggi Province (19.5%) on the roadside (31.3%). Health damage from CRI is prevented by following the guidelines for cold wave control. The KCDC strives to raise public awareness by providing health warnings against CRI every winter.
